TSG spent 3 days at Tokyo Big Sight covering the latest and greatest in JDM equipment and golf accessories from the Japan Golf Fair 2007 . We recap the highlights from each manufacturer and give you a peek at what's in store for the Japanese golf market 2007.
Thanks to TourSpecGolfer who reported live from the fair and snapped lots and lots of great pictures for all of us who couldn't make it to Tokyo!
Mizuno Japan's new runbird logo was everywhere. They have a new ENDO Forged JPX E500 Iron that is the talk of the
town, Mizuno has added some new shaft options for their custom ordered
drivers and irons, and they also have 2-3% market share (and growing) on the JPGA tour
using the Quad Series Triax Weave shafts (these are sold shaft only and
some players are using it in Titleist drivers and other OEMs).
The new JPX Ti Face Iron is
their mens game improvement iron that features a beta titanium face with
multiple tungsten weighting devices within the head. A big deal now and
why Mizuno is more popular with better players, is the fact
that they offer custom order driver lie angles for players. This is a
big deal for some as your driver lie angle being fit actually improves
where you hit the ball on the face and that will equal to more
distance. Its not about contact with the ground more so contact with
the ball and the angle the head comes in at. New JPX woods and an MOI
E500 driver with about 5000 MOI (not the same MOI that other companies have
been using, this version is measured from the top to bottom of the face
instead of heel to toe). Mizuno has a new 4 layer ball! Thats right four
layers this is the next generation of ball technology seen today. Only
several other brands in Japan are doing similar, Tourstage X-01R4 and the XXIO
DC Ball.
Since 1934 Daiwa Seiko has been a huge manufacture of many types of
industries goods, they utilize a variety of materials in all of their
applications and have many concepts unseen or thought of to the golfing
world. They are most famous for their domination in the Fishing Rod
Technology arena and have been doing intensive research for many years
to build a golf shaft that actually provides a noticeable difference in
distance when fit with the proper swing.
ONOFF is their golf equipment
brand that has been around for over a decade producing high quality
golf equipment. Recently they have caught our eye with their new Forged
Cavity Backs and Control Irons, Their use of tungsten in the long irons
varies through out each club which allows them to create the optimal
MOI and consistant CG location throughout the set. From sexy new forged
wedges to woods that are HOT of the face Daiwa also brings the ultimate
in materials and manufacturing techology to a new shaft line called
RODDIO. Roddio is hand made in Higashikurume, Japan and is the most
advanced golf shaft made today. only a few companies have 4 ply weave
shafts but Roddio has taken it one step further with the worlds first 5
ply. By making a -45*, +45*, 90*, and 0* weaves then taking the final
and fifth layer that weaves in and out of the 4 making the most high
quality and best performing shaft to this date in the golf industry.
There are two models the WA and the BA, the WA is for the golfer who
produces lots of wrist lag while the BA is for someone with less.
Within each series there are W6, W7, and W8 series weight options. This
shaft will be coming to america perhaps in 2008 (but available now at Tourspecgolf.com!)
Honma continues to release their slower swing speed models as well
as some players blades, cavity backs and wedges from last year. With
almost no presence in the USA we were kind enough to sit down and have
a chat with them on a strategy proposal and design elements that would
better suit their gear to the American Golfer. Stay tuned we have
something exciting in the works coming in 2007 for you guys with Honma
Beres. Check out their new models, lots of this is geared toward the
slower swing speed or older player. they do have the 9 series for the
single digit player.
Taylormade Japan shows off its new ASGI+ insert which is similar to
the very soft RSI Japan only insert except with the ASGI grooves.
Available in Corza models in multiple necks as well. Taylormades JDM
line up includes the R7 XR driver, FW, and Irons as well as Burner
irons, womens clubs, and many new bags and accessories.
Fourteen Golf had a strong showing at the Golf Show with their huge booth
and many new surprises. Their first 460cc driver was released the
JC-707 not to mention the Type J wedge and the all new V3. They also
released a new game improvement iron and some new golf bags and soft
goods. For those of you who dont know Fourteen was originally a golf
club head design company and have been producing high end soft impact
golf clubs with great success and growth in recent. Their brand seems
to be very solid in design and manufacturing and I can highly suggest
almost all of their products to anyone with great pride.
Yururi wedge co. has been in business creating raw grain black
forged wedges in Japan for over 5 years. Their most recent releases had
me pretty intrigued. The head designer Mr. Keita Miyoshi has also
created a Divinci Code wedge made in every measurement conforming to
the 1:1.618 rule. For those of you who dont know the theory its the
number that creates the best looking proportion to the human eye such
as the Venus de Milo ( Aphrodite ), The Pyramids of Egypt, Roman
Structures, and the worlds most famous works of art. Its got a rather
odd shape but the idea behind it is the first of its kind in the golf
industry.
This year Tourstage was sporting their new X-Drive and VIQ series
clubs. They had a variety of prototypes in different shapes and sizes
next to the retail models. The new X-Wedge was just released and their
new FW's too Also a new 460cc ultra forgiving VIQ MX driver has been
released for the average player vs the DEEP model for lower handicaps. Tourstage has also
released their new X-01R4 ball which is one of only a few 4 layer balls
on the market.
This year Srixon has its new ZR-600 irons, driver, and wedges along
with the new WR series for the mid handicap player available in a new
460cc driver and irons. The Z-Steel is still Srixons #1 FW and XXIO has
their new 460cc revamped driver and forged irons.
Cleveland Golf and Fidra had a nice booth and also a couple of Japan
only gems, like the CG2 Type J which has tungsten weighting lowering
the CG point. Also the 2000pcs limited Miura forged cleveland wedge.
Way to go Cleveland Japan, its about darn time you did somthing other
than that CMM stuff.
This year Callaway Japan did its homework and I am glad to say that the
all new X-Forged Iron is Forged in JAPAN! Thats right even the USA
retail version. Way to go Callaway! Also they had a bunch of new
products like the Hyper ERC drvier that is replacing the ERC3. The new
Hyper is 460cc's and features their CMT chemical milled crown keeping
it ultra thin at 2mm. This is the first Callaway driver to incorporate
the Heat Forged Hyperbolic Face Technology. It makes the hitting zone
4mm thick in the shape of an X while the gaps between the X are only
2mm thick creating better feel and a more distance on off center hits.
Its face is made of SP700 while its crown is 15-3-3-3, its body is
titanium and its 23g weight chip is too. This is a Japan only driver
and yes its USGA conforming. Callaway Japan has decided only to sell
the FT-i and FT-5 drivers but they have a new list of shaft options
that rock hard like the Quattro Tech, PT-6, Rombax X, Diamana, not to
mention the stock shaft has a triax weave in it. The ERC Hot FW is
still the fairway wood in this series along with the Japan only ERC
Forged Iron and ERC Titanium face irons. Callaway has also released a
new Hyper ERC Ball, We are talking the next gen balls for america seen
now in Japan. Awesome kids clubs and ladies gear but the apparel was
out of this world not to mention very expensive. Callaway Japan has
insane clothing and its quality luxury style. The odyssey putters are
the same as the USA models.
Last year Royal Collection had heavy tour use of their DB forged
wedges, This year they are introducing an all new wedge grind geared
toward the athlete or better player. RC also has a new players CB along
with a prototype blade and their SFI Forged Iron. The FD fairway wood
is an ultra easy to hit forgiving wood designed with maximum FW MOI,
the TD+ utility wood has been getting rave reviews in Japanese golf
mags for the better player. All in all RC had an amazing both with some
rock solid products that I wasn't even expecting.
Yamaha Inpres X really impressed with their special launch monitor
fitting device that measures the direction the head comes into impact
with the ball and what face angle is best suited to your swing. They
had a full line up of new product prepared for 2007 release everything
from irons and wedges to drivers and womens clubs.
Nothing very new from Mamiya Axiv this year, Axiv technology is
being brought to the USA by the ACCRA with Axiv tech line. It's is not exactly
the same technology as the JDM shaft nor is it the same specifications. It's more so a 4
ply weave shaft with specs that fit higher swing speeds. In the summer
the Japanese Axiv line will have a new release, not sure on the name or
technology being used.
Roma Ro Grand Quality Fine Stage is a strange name indeed like many JDM products but the quality is
top notch, SUS303 and FE putters define this brand as the fastest
growing JPGA choice of putter on the tour. The manufacturing of these
putters along with the balance from grip to sole is refined with new
age blended with classic designs. Their wedges and putters are
available now through TSG but the irons wont be coming out till mid
April.
