Spent a couple of hours today at the range (indoors of course since today was the first day it snowed in Toronto). Besides getting some much need off-season practice in I wanted to spend some serious time with the Epon Technity 460 and Axiv combo. Being indoors and only being able to drive the ball into a net around 50 yards in front of me, I was unable to measure distance but only feel, which for me is just as important on a driver. I picked up the Epon 460 10.5* square faced head a couple of weeks back from TSG and had it shafted with a Mamiya Axiv 6060L at 44.5", a deadly combination. Feedback on both the Epon and the Axiv's have been extremely positive, especially when put together. I was busy with work before the holidays so I lent the driver for a week to a 14 year old LPGA prodigy who is the youngest member of the Canadian Amateur Team. She returned the club to me this afternoon before my range session letting me know that the Epon was just deadly at the outdoor range. Fantastic feel, straight as an arrow but still easily workable, good kick in the shaft resulting in drives around the 240y range even in this cold weather.

I headed straight to the driving stations and with minimal stretching (when I'm excited I tend to under stretch), began swinging away. Setup is very comfortable and eye pleasing. The club sits perfectly aligned on its sole and the clean head with no markings of any sort is just the way I like it. Even at 460cc's, it doesn't nearly look or feel that big. but just right. My clubmaker used a new Blue Winn DSi grip on the club and it blended right in with the Axiv's blue tinted weave at the butt of the shaft. The rest of the Axiv as many of you know is Gold/Orange, it looks great!

I proceeded to spend an hour straight pounding balls with the Epon. I just can't stop repeating how much I love it's soft feel. Everytime I hit one I get "lost" in it's feel. It's almost hypnotizing! One thing for sure is that the sweet spot is massive. Looking closely at the face of the Epon reveals a two tone color. You can see where the face was attached onto the head by that color and that entire area is basically a sweet spot. It's the area encompassing the middle out to the edges of the score lines. Practically every shot in that area felt good. Fortunately or unfortunately they didn't have the cleanest range balls, so I was able to keep track of my shots. I have a tendency to hit shots off center just a little towards the toe and they still felt fabulous! My bad shots go right as fades to even slices on my bad day. The Epon is EASY to hit straight. The shaft definitely contributes a lot to that I think. The Axiv at 60 grams and with a low kick has the ball shoot off the face and looks pretty straight (albeit for 50 yards). I can't wait to hit this baby outside. Best driver I've hit this year (and for your info that includes TM R5 Dual, R7 425, Bridgestone J33R, Ping G5, Tourstage X-Drive, Nike DFI, Callaway Ti454)
