Today is Valentine's day in Japan and for those of you who love Japan you probably know that in Japan only the girls give out chocolate and gifts on Valentine's Day. Yes it is lucky to be a guy in Japan on V-day where the most popular dudes can get stacks of chocolate and the nerd in the corner sadly get none. This can cause many kinds stress for those giving and receiving choco in Japan. For the girls its who do I want to give to, who do I have to give to, and what am I going to give/make? For the guys it's how many will I get, from whom will I get or will I get any at all this year?

There are two types of choco given by girls, homei choco for those they are seriously interested in and giri choco for guy aquaintances such as co-workers or bosses or even classmates and guy friends. So yes sometimes girls can be carrying 20 or more boxes of choco to work or school on V-day. The days leading up to V-day in Japan can be quite crazy. Women buying chocolate everywhere you look. Girls in bookstores snapping pictures of choco recipes with their cell phones. It can get crazy.

When all is said and done, the guys have a chance to reciprocate their feelings one month later on March 14th, called White Day, by giving back choco to the girl they are interested or just out of obligation. What does all this translate into? Big business for stores in Japan. Yes for me it never looks like the economy here is bad as people just spend spend spend.

I was born and raised in Canada so I guess I am still stuck in my ways. I got my wife a present and a chocolate dessert pack shipped over from a famous tea shop in Kyoto. I guess she got too used to Canada cause I didn't get anything! But we shared some delicious matcha (green tea flavored) chocolate, mochi, dorayaki, pudding and roll cake. What a great set of desserts! For those who ever come by Japan this is a great shop to get some gifts to bring home. Just be careful because everything is prepared fresh everyday and must be eaten fast while fresh (the delivery came next day on ice.
