More demo irons arrived this week including forged X-Blade 901, 701, 701G and GR C-1's from Tourstage and XXIO's new Forged iron for 2009 and Srixon's new GIE line.  Also on the table are Fourteen's TC-550 Forged (this is not new) and the all new Honma Beres 2009 MG803 iron. The Tourstage and Sri Sports irons are their usual awesome quality and design irons to suit many levels of golfers. You can see all the pictures I took in the irons section of the TSG Gallery.

I especially found the XXIO and 701G with their pocket cavities to be very interesting designs. The 701G which is third in line after the 901 blade and 701CB in target level almost seems as small as the blade when compared side by side with the naked eye. All the Tourstage irons have minimal offset and can be considered compact except the GT. All are definitely aimed at the good ball striker with the 701G and GR adding forgivness. The GIE is a new concept from Srixon Japan who in the past focused on the athlete golfer and had XXIO target the average golfer. The XXIO forged and GIE iron blur that boundry line and almost overlap.  The XXIO is a great design and mid sized forged CB with soft forged body and a thin chrome vandium face for high ball speeds. The Srixon is slightly smaller than mid sized and has less offset than the XXIO. The GIE is also cast with a small pocket cavity.

All these irons felt great.  The old TC-550 Forged just happened to be lying around for comparison with the MG803 from Honma. Honma has grown a lot in the right direction the last few years with its Beres line, appealing to mainstream golfers as well as those with deep pockets and no budget limits. The MG803 is one amazing looking iron. Detail is superb as is finish and design. It was also very solid feeling, I almost could not tell it had a small pocket cavity. The MG803 is Honma's first ever varying flow structure design. By varying the design from long irons to short irons, the MG803 gives distance and forgiveness with the long irons but spin control and accuracy with the short irons. The 3-7 iron feature a special 2 pieces structure with weight disributed to heel and toe. This results in increased MOI. The 3 and 4 iron also feature thinner faces at 2.4mm while the 5-7 are 2.7mm. The undercut cavity and the 2 x 5g tungsten weight eliminate missed shots and distance loss. The 8-SW irons feature a 1 piece construction with integrated cavity design. The 8-10 iron keeps a constant position for the moment of inertia allowing pure impact on the ball and feel. They feature 2 x 3.5g of tunsten in the cavity. The 11-SW are focused on spin and direction as wedges with a large face and large sweet area. As you can see I really liked the Honmas especially since their standard graphite shaft, the ARMRQ is so underatted and is probably as good as any other brand out there.

The MG803 is aimed at the athlete golfer or low handicapper/good ball striker. It is definitely an iron I would consider playing if I could actually get better. (^_^)
