The old overclocking and computer otaku blood still flows in me. The other day I sold my Mountain Mods UFO server I had running in the basement to a friend and he mentioned to me that lots of people were having a good experience with running Windows 2008 Server as their desktop. I decided to do some research on the web and people were hailing 2008 Server as the best operating system Microsoft has ever built and what Vista should have been. Users were saying it pretty much runs far faster than Vista without all the useless services that most normal humans don't need. So after reading the following articles:
Using Windows Server 2008 as a SUPER workstation OS
Server 2008: The Windows Workstation we always wanted
and then using Systweak Blogs step by step pages to convert Server into a workstation by activating the Windows Desktop Experience here: Systweak Blog: Windows.
I am now writing this on Server 2008 which I'm so far pretty happy with. It looks just like Vista by turning on the Desktop Experience which even has Aero and the Quality Windows Audio Video Experience so I can play all my media files in all their glory.
So far everything I've had on Vista installs fine on Server including all my graphics programs, media programs, web design programs. The only thing I've had problems with is finding a virus scanner that works with a Server Edition (for free that is (^_^)).
I even have the sidebar working so besides the login screen I really don't notice that this is 2008 Server except for the speedier functionality (after enabling Superfetch) and lower memory utilization which are all good things of course!
Those of you wanting to try a demo, Microsoft has an extendable 60 day trial for download on their site here.
Here are a list of direct links to Systweak to help setup your Windows Server as a workstation:
